Mary Ann Cooper, MD, Professor Emerita of Emergency Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago, is the recognized international authority on lightning injuries and injury prevention. In addition to working with electrical and lightning injury survivors, their families and practicing emergency medicine, she has worked with the US National Weather Service and broadcast meteorologists and has given hundreds of interviews to print, broadcast and web-based media. She is the only physician to have been awarded Fellowship by the American Meteorological Society as well as an AMS Special Award for her pioneering worldwide educational work on lightning injury and lightning injury prevention. In her ‘retirement’, she directs the African Centres for Lightning and Electromagnetics (www.ACLENet.org).
